UK Council for Psychotherapy

(UKCP) is an umbrella organisation, with over 70 training and listing organisations in membership. UKCP holds the national register of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors, containing over 6,700 registrants who meet exacting standards and training requirements.

UKCP produces publications and runs meetings and conferences to inform and consult on issues of concern to practitioners and support continuing professional development.  

UKCP's charitable objectives

  • to promote the art and science of psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling for the public benefit
  • to promote research in psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling, and to disseminate the results of any such research
  • to promote high standards of education, training and practice in psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling
  • to promote the wider provision of psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling for all sections of the public.

Information for the public

Psychotherapy is one of the 'talking therapies'. It can help people gain insight into their difficulties or distress, establish a greater understanding of their motivation, enable them to find more appropriate ways of coping and bring about changes in their thinking and behaviour.

The service listing below gives talking therapy services provided by the NHS, charitable organisations or private practitioners. 
To make an appointment: Your GP can refer you for NHS services and you can contact charity sector services direct.  Read our factsheet ‘Finding a Therapist or Counsellor’ for info on private practitioners. Some services specialise by offering counselling, for example, to Asian women or couples. 
Charges: NHS services are free, some charities ask for a donation or have a sliding scale of fees and private counselling/therapy typically costs between £25-50.
Waiting times for talking therapies vary from a week for some private services to a number of months for some NHS services.
