YCT was started by local people who saw that there were a lack of services available to support local young people and wanted to do something about it.

Over the years YCT has grown and changed, we provide around 3000 hours of one 2 one community based counselling each year, though we now work in more places and provide other services too. YCT provides quality services through the provision of BACP-accredited counsellors and other qualified staff. We believe that young people who use YCT's services probably have enough to cope with in their lives without the additional burden of having to find the money to pay to come and see us - so we don't make any charge.

Desire2Aspire is a programme developed by YCT in partnership with other local agencies including four local secondary schools. Running over 10 sessions D2A currently works with groups of young women and aims to improve self-esteem, build confidence and aspirations along with enhancing knowledge around sexual health with a view to reducing the risk of early pregnancy.

The KWP Project aims to increase the life chances of a group of the most vulnerable and disenfranchised young people in Southend who are making the transition from living in care to independent living.

YCT is always looking for new opportunities to work collaboratively and innovatively in the development of new projects that support young people. One recent project is with environmental charity the Green Light Trust - working with young men in year 9 at Harlow's Passmores School. The project works with young people, often with mild learning, social or emotional difficulties who are disengaged from school.

They meet in a safe outdoor woodland environment on a weekly basis learning a range of outdoor/forestry skills and are also able to engage with a YCT counsellor, with whom they work therapeutically one-to-one or in small groups on issues that affect their lives.
