West Essex Youth Offending Team

The aim of Essex Youth Offending Service (YOS) is to work with children and young people who have offended and to help prevent them getting into further trouble. We achieve this by working together with young people and their parents or carers, the victims of crime and other agencies and organisations in the local community. Our Early Intervention Programme also works with younger children aged 8-13, where there are concerns that they may become involved in offending activity. We also encourage volunteers to get involved.

Each Youth Offending Team (YOT) includes a police officer, social workers, probation officers and staff from Health and Education. Their main areas of work are to

  • Support children and young people and prevent them from offending
  • Reduce the risk of further offending by young people and help them face up to the consequences of their offending
  • Work with and support victims of youth crime
  • Support young people who are bailed by the courts
  • Prepare reports for the courts
  • Supervise young people on court orders
  • Assist with arrangements for a young person remanded to Local Authority care by the courts
  • Support young people during sentence and on release from custodial sentences
  • Assist parents through voluntary support and through Parenting Orders.
